How HDR Photography Makes a Difference

North Creek Lounge HDR photography

In real estate, photography is paramount to your success. In business visitors want to check you out before coming in. Often times, the first time a prospective client will view your property or business is through photos. Ready to close on the sale faster? Looking to get more customers? Learn more about how HDR photography can work for your business below.

What Is HDR Photography?

HDR photography brings out the best features of the imagery you’re capturing behind the camera lens. Also known as multi-exposure, it uses several exposures of the same image and stands for “High Dynamic Range.” For real estate professionals, HDR photography is very appealing because it includes the best illumination of the lightest and brightest elements of your space.

HDR photography provides the unique capability of intentionally capturing multiple lighting exposures. It can show a wider range of colors and light and more details in between the extremes. Colors are more vivid and unique in HDR content. Additionally, bright parts of a scene are brighter while dark parts can be darker, so you get to see all the details.

How Is a HDR Image Created?

To create the optimal HDR photography, it’s best to have your camera mounted on a tripod. You’re essentially taking a single image with three to five different sets of lighting exposures known as exposure value (EV). For the 3 shot version the settings for HDR are typically:

  • dark under-exposure (-2 EV)
  • correct exposure (0 EV)
  • light over-exposure (+2 EV)

The result is different depths of lighting for the same image. The concept consists of getting unique dimensions of the same image.

The different exposure levels capture the lightest elements, darkest elements, and everything in between to bring out unique elements of your space first seen by the naked eye, but rarely captured by a camera lens without intent.

How Does HDR Work?

HDR photography works to enhance competitive light or shadows. When artificial and natural indoor light compete with each other, HDR is the best feature to successfully capture the essence of your space. It’s used to highlight your interior space when the lighting is tricky, but HDR photography can also be used outdoors. The combination of the proper exposure produces picture perfect results.

How To Shoot In HDR

In order to shoot in HDR, you must set your camera to “bracketing mode” or “exposure bracketing” which are the same thing. By capturing several exposures, you can capture the beauty of the space in the same way the eyes see it. The final result is created by using a camera and specialized software to merge the images into one. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and now you can capture it with the power of a lens.

RAW Format vs JPG Format

For many photographers, the question is whether to shoot in RAW or JPG format. Most photography experts will agree, RAW is preferred since it allows for more post processing options. RAW is known for their superior dynamic range when compared to JPEG. That is because when an image is captured with a digital camera, it is recorded as RAW data. If the camera format is set to JPEG, this raw data is then processed and compressed before it is saved in the JPEG format.

If the camera format is set to RAW, no processing is applied, and therefore the file stores more tonal and color data. With more data stored in the file, there is more processing flexibility than a JPEG can offer.

The winning advantage of RAW over JPEG is its exposure creates a digital file. RAW digitally captures everything from your camera sensor. You have the option of capturing a digital file that’s better for editing or storing on a PC. RAW files are larger and process slow while many photo files are transferred to JPEG for this reason. JPEG has smaller files and faster process timing. The smaller files are also easier for your monitor and camera when it comes to loading. Again, when it comes to RAW and JPEG, it’s a matter of choice.

Summary of HDR Photography

HDR shows a wide range of color and light. For real estate professionals, you get more detail in between the extremes. The truth is the colors are more unique and vivid in HDR content. Additionally, bright scenes are brighter while dark scenes are darker which is an opportunity to capture all of the unique details of your space.

HDR captures what the naked eye captures naturally with true accuracy. Whether you’re capturing the bright light of the indoors or the shadow of the streetlights at night, HDR provides superior photography options. It’s used by many landscape and real estate photographers to truly highlight your space.

HDR allows the foreground and the bright background to blend well together. Capture high quality bracket extremes in JPEG or RAW. HDR is an opportunity to take your photography to a greater dimension. If you’re in real estate, attractive photography engages your audience and helps them build a connection with your space. HDR captures a dynamic view of your residential or commercial space and the inside of businesses.
